  1. I deal with private prisons on a regular basis due to my job. The people that work at these facilities are under paid and under trained. The starting salary is about $12 an hour. These companies, like CCA move into small rural towns, and with the promise of jobs and increasing the tax base, get free land, sewer, water and electricity. The private prisons bottom line is based on the number of inmates housed and what the state (in my case Colorado) is willing to pay. CCA has lobbied to increase mandatory sentences as well as the 3 strikes rule (third felony and you are sentenced to life…AKA the Big Bitch). Of course the idea that the government (local and federal) is willing to transfer custody of a citizen to a private entity is very disturbing.
